SUV Causes Major Sinkhole, Starts String Of Accidents

ORLANDO – An out-of-control SUV slammed into a fire hydrant early Saturday, causing a major sinkhole that swallowed the vehicle with the driver inside.
Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said the driver was not paying attention, ran off of Alafaya Trail near Challenger Parkway, and hit the hydrant, causing the water line to break and shoot water all over the street.
Troopers said the force of the water eroded the ground underneath the SUV, causing a sinkhole that slowly swallowed the vehicle.
A crane pulled the SUV out of the sinkhole. The driver made it out unharmed.
The wreck caused traffic on Alafaya Trail to slow down in the area, resulting in another wreck on a different part of the road, causing troopers to block off that section of Alafaya Trail as well.
Troopers said a drunk driver went through some cones in the second blocked area, and hit the back of an FHP cruiser.
The trooper driving the cruiser was not inside the car at the time, but he did have to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
The drunk driver was arrested for driving under the influence.
