Cougar mauls cat in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – State and federal wildlife officials are tracking a cougar that mauled a domestic cat in a northwest Corvallis neighborhood.
Wildlife biologist Nancy Taylor says the attack occurred near an elementary school. The cougar was spotted throughout the weekend, and Taylor says it appears to have lost its wariness of humans.
Oregon has more than 5,000 cougars, but there has only been one case of a cougar attacking a human in the state – and that was in 1972.
If a cougar should attack, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends that you fight back with rocks, sticks or whatever is available.
Taylor says officials are moving aggressively to control the animal.
